Someone reached out to me and wanted me to help them finish a horror game.

More information

One of my latter freelance projects was helping a person with finishing a horror game. They had an idea and had done work on laying out levels, but needed someone with the technical acumen to bring that design document and those scenes to life.

What I did

I helped them with all of the game mechanics: everything from making a player controller, to adding interactivity to some elements in the game world, as well as adding triggers for sounds, animations, game events and so on. Overall it wasn't too big of a project and didn't exactly get critical acclaim, but it was nice to help someone out with their vision of a small game, that was clearly inspired by the likes of P.T.

What I learnt

Personally, I'd say that this project let me learn that finishing a game and shipping it to Steam (even with functionality like achievements, which I helped bring to life) wasn't that hard, as long as you have the vision and the resources to bring the project to its conclusion.

However, the standards for what constitutes a finished game are pretty high, so I'd definitely put about 10x more time into anything that I want to ship myself.
